What is Dysphagia?

An estimated 15 million Americans are afflicted with dysphagia, a condition that causes discomfort or difficulty swallowing. At its most severe - when patients entirely lose their ability to eat - dysphagia can profoundly disrupt a life.

• Common among stroke survivors, patients with degenerative neurological diseases like Parkinson's, and patients with head and neck cancer.
• Over 60,000 Americans die each year from complications associated with swallowing dysfunctions, most commonly aspiration pneumonia.

VitalStim^® Therapy is the first proven treatment for dysphagia. It's the only dysphagia therapy backed by compelling clinical data and cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Training muscles to function again

VitalStim Therapy uses small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. At the same time, trained specialists help patients "re-educate" their muscles through rehabilitation therapy.

• A small, carefully calibrated current is delivered by specially designed electrodes.

·        The current stimulates motor nerves in the throat.

·        The muscles responsible for swallowing contract.

RESULTS:

VitalStim Therapy Electrical Simulation 98.4% of patients improve their swallow function score 97.5% of patients with severe dysphagia regained swallow functions past the point of PEG tube dependency 38.3% of patients with severe dysphagia regained full normal swallow function At 3 year follow up, over 76% had retained swallow function and only 3% reported aspiration.
