October 2001
Dear friends,
Praise the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! This is the song of my heart because the Lord is great. He knows my every need.
During the first part of August I was in the USA, in Bloomington, Illinois, where God has opened a door for the girls (Julie & Judith) to attend school this year. They are both Seniors this year and since school closed in May, we knew that they were not going to go to that little school this Fall since it is closed. As I mentioned in my last letter, they are going to Bloomington High School and they are staying with two different families, Dr. Brad & Becky Barnes and Tom & Melissa Watterson. We praise the Lord for what He does for us! Once again He proves to us that He is with usso there is no reason for us to be terrified or to be discouraged when things are not yet in place.
I arrived home on a Friday around noon and on Saturday morning I left with Rose and Prisca to go to St-Marc in the central plateau of Haiti where 47 of our young adults were attending a camp. Since the formation of the Pillatre Christian Church, this is the first time that any of our groups left for a week to go somewhere. Every time we tried to organize something like that, money always created a problem. But this year under the leadership of 3 young girls (Linda, Wildie, Loise) and 2 young men (Isaac & Samuel), they finally organized a youth camp. I was there with them for 2 days and I had the chance to teach several classes.
The school year 2000-2001 was again a great year for our school. The government, as before, chose our facilities for a testing center. With the Security Wall around the property, it is very secure and the government officials like it very much. There is one great benefit for us when they choose to use our place as a testing center. Our students stay at home in their school, so they are not afraid and that helps them keep their concentration. We sent 44 6th graders to the official exams. Not only did 41 of them pass it, but we had the first 5 highest scores for the district! The report of the education officials said that this year due to all the problems that we have had in our country, the overall success on the exams is as low as 37%. Everybody is complaining about the results of the exams but as for us, we are giving thanks to the Lord for we have maintained the same high standards.
Please keep us in your daily prayers because the situation worsens in our country. Many parents cannot send their children to school. We dont know what we are going to do this school year because not only the things of necessity are extremely scarce, but they are more expensive than they were 2 months ago. The international community cut off all the aid that they were giving to Haiti. Inside the country the politicians are still fighting for power and for gain. The so-called president, as they say, is in his small shoes. It is like a vicious circle: the same old thing is happening again, the rich are getting richer, and the poor, poorer. Please pray for us and for the country of Haiti!
Yours because of Calvary,
Emmanuel Laguerre
